A cellist born in Rome, he took his diploma in 1985 at the “Santa Cecilia” Conservatoire in Rome under Francesco Strano, graduating with top marks.
He went on to study with Amedeo Baldovino, Radu Aldulescu, Mirel Jancovici and Christophe Coin, and with Riccardo Brengola for chamber music.
His competition record opens in 1986, with first prize and an honourable mention at the “Città di Stresa” International Competition for Young Musicians.
That same year he took second prize at the RAI Chamber Music Competition. In 1988 he received the diploma of merit of the Accademia Musicale Chigiana on its advanced ensemble course, and in 1990 the Chigiana awarded him its diploma of honour as the finest student on the chamber music course. He was second prize at the “Antonio Tonelli” National Cello Competition in Carpi in 1989 and at the National Cello Competition in Lodi in 1994. In 1990 he completed the advanced chamber music course at the Accademia di Santa Cecilia with full marks, and in 1992 took his solo cello diploma at the Rijkshogeschool Maastricht.
Also in 1990 he founded the “Guido Chigi” Quintet, with which he has performed in Italy, France, Austria and Japan. In 1995 he was appointed principal cello of the Orchestra Regionale del Lazio, where he also appeared as a soloist until 2000, serving at the same time as principal cello of the Wiener Akademie Orchestra in Vienna.
From 2000 to 2012 he was principal cello and solo cello of the chamber orchestra “Concerto Italiano” under Rinaldo Alessandrini, specialising in early music on original instruments, touring the major theatres of South America, the United States and Europe. He has played solo cello in the continuo at the Teatro San Carlo in Naples, the Teatro Comunale in Bologna, the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome, the Teatro Municipale Valli in Reggio Emilia, the Teatro Real in Madrid, the Opera of Salamanca and the Opéra of Strasbourg. He records exclusively for the Opus 111 label, with numerous awards including two Grand Prix du Disque.
