Shelley Jackson
Winner of the Maria Callas Grand Prix, the young Italian-American soprano Shelley Jackson is rapidly establishing herself as a rising star on the international scene.

Immediately before the pandemic she sang the title role in a new production of Tosca at Malmö Opera, returning to the role in autumn 2022 at the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Landestheater. In the current season she also sings Tatyana in Eugene Onegin at Theater und Orchester Neubrandenburg, and makes her role debut as Katerina Izmailova in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk at the Landestheater Detmold with Zoran Todorovich, in a new production by Joan Anton Rechi. Last season Shelley covered and sang the rehearsals of Anna Bolena at Zurich Opera for Diana Damrau in a new production by David Alden, as well as the rehearsals of Tosca at the Tiroler Landestheater, and stepped in at Theater Bielefeld for the opening night and further performances of their new production of

La Bohème
as Mimì. In 2019 Shelley gave a series of critically acclaimed role and house debuts: Anna Bolena in a new production at the Opéra de Lausanne and on a return to the Badisches Staatstheater; the title role in Manon and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni with the Mozarteum Orchestra at the Salzburg Landestheater; Tatyana in Eugene Onegin at the Buxton International Festival; and a return to the “Teatro Massimo” in Palermo for Rossini’s Petite messe solennelle.

at the Badisches Staatstheater in Karlsruhe, praised as “something of a revelation… a superbly thrilling performance… she proved a bel canto virtuoso… a singing tragedienne of the highest order” (Rheinpfalz). Shelley had just graduated from the International Opera Studio at the Opernhaus Zürich, where she made her debut as Musetta in a new production of

La Bohème and as Micaëla in Carmen , and created the title role of Song-Lian in the world premiere production of Christian Jost’s Rote Laterne. Further highlights as a member of the studio at the Opernhaus Zürich include covering Cecilia Bartoli as Comtesse Adèle in Le comte Ory, Diana Damrau as Adina in L’elisir d’amore and Giulietta in a new production of I Capuleti e i Montecchi under Fabio Luisi, as well as Maid Marian in Andreas Homoki’s Robin Hood and die Vertraute in Elektra. Other recent appearances include her house and role debut as Mimì in La Bohèmeat the Haus für Mozart in Salzburg under Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla, her house debut at the “Teatro Massimo” in Palermo as Micaëla in Calixto Bieito’s production of

Carmen , and her UK debut, again as Micaëla, in the inaugural season of the Grange Festival. She has also returned to Santa Fe Opera as the Italian Singer in Capriccio and for Roméo et Juliette , and to the Grange Festival as Mary Crawford in Jonathan Dove’s Mansfield Park, as well as singing Mimì in La Bohème at Dorset Opera.Shelley made an unscheduled debut on the opening night of Santa Fe Opera’s 2014 season when, as a member of the apprentice programme, she stepped in to sing Norina in Laurent Pelly’s new production of Don Pasquale , going on to sing further performances to great acclaim. As a Santa Fe apprentice she also sang Iza in The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein and Albina in La donna del lago, and won the Judith Raskin and Anna Case MacKay awards. A graduate of the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia, her roles there included Violetta in

La traviata , Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia and Tatyana in Eugene Onegin. Other student roles include the title role in Iolanta with the Russian Opera Workshop, Susannah for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival and the Countess inLe nozze di Figaro with Peabody Opera Theatre., Rosina ne Il barbiere di Siviglia e Tatyana in Eugene Onegin. Shelley’s concert work includes a recital for Russian Chamber Art Society in Washington DC, a residency at the Baldwin Wallace Art Song Festival, and verismo concerts with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra in Canada and Il Quintetto Society in Rome. She has sung Vivaldi’s Gloria and Mozart’s Missa Brevis with Diveriticanto in Winterthur, Switzerland, Mozart’s Coronation Mass with the Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, and has appeared in opera recital at the Estonia Concert Hall in Tallinn. Shelley has received an impressive number of honours and awards, among them the Joan Sutherland Prize presented by Richard Bonynge at the 2016 Veronica Dunne Competition, second prize at the Dorothy Lincoln Smith, Giargiari Bel Canto and Mario Lanza competitions, and third prize at the Concours International de Chant de Marmande. Earlier awards include the Bertha Koempel Award of the Liederkranz Foundation, grants from the Career Bridges and Licia Albanese-Puccini foundations, and the Met Regional Auditions.

Shelley holds a bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University, a master’s in opera from the Boyer College of Music at Temple University and a performance certificate from the Academy of Vocal Arts in Philadelphia.
She also spent two years in vocal study and role preparation with Mirella Freni at the Centro Universale di Bel Canto (CUBEC) in Modena, Italy, where she won the Nicolai Ghiaurov scholarship. Shelley holds dual Italian and American citizenship and lives in Rome.
