Overview

The course will take place fortnightly and is open to all levels: beginners and advanced students.

Alongside the course there is a flute masterclass devoted to the philologically correct interpretation of the 18th-century flute repertoire and to an introduction to playing the traverso flute.

Flute masterclass

The philologically correct interpretation of the 18th-century flute repertoire – An introduction to playing the traverso flute.

The course is aimed at advanced-level flautists. The following aspects will be covered:

• The ideal sound of the 18th-century flute through the analysis of historical sources.
• Phrasing, articulation and rubato.
• Ornamentation in various styles, with particular attention to the compositions of J. S. Bach.
• Improvisation of cadenzas and preludes.
• The interpretation of the “classics” of the 18th-century flute repertoire in accordance with the performance practice set out in treatises of the period.

Introduction to the practice of the traverso flute

Sound production and intonation. Instrumental technique, phrasing, articulation and ornamentation in various styles.

Individual and group lessons. A number of instruments will be made available to students.
